Dunia was the platform of choice in the Mjini Hackathon 2024 on Earth Observation for mapping Sustainable Urban Development in Africa, organised by Dunia and AfriGEO.
The hackathon took place from the 18th until the 20th of October 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya 🇰🇪
The participants had to think out of the box to develop innovative solutions that leverage Earth Observation data to tackle one of the following thematic issues:
Besides these challenge tasks, also own innovative ideas in the context of sustainable urban development have been accepted1
A total of 110 people have registered for the competition.
The criteria that decided about the winners were:
How effectively does the solution leverage Dunia's data, tools, and infrastructure to address urbanization challenges in Africa?
How well does the solution address the unique challenges and opportunities of urbanization in Africa?
What potential impact does the solution have on promoting sustainable urban development and resilience in African cities?
Is the solution scalable and adaptable to different cities and regions within Africa?
How innovative and technically sound is the approach to leveraging Earth observation data for urban development?
→ It was a tight race. Instead of three winning teams, we chose four winners 🏆
The winners of the hackathon presented their innovative ideas by showing their notebooks.
These notebooks will be published as example notebooks inside the Dunia Sandbox so that the entire Dunia community can benefit from them.
The feedback for Dunia was great!
Some developers used local software like ArcGIS alongside Dunia or imported data generated with Google Earth Engine. However, these approaches are difficult to reproduce.
In general, the “hackers” learned everything is possible with Dunia if you provide your feedback and start communicating with each other but also with the Dunia team to foster a cooperative community.
We extend a big thank you to:
